We paint a lot of doors in our spray room. Most of the interior doors we paint are new. If our customer wants to update both style and color, it often makes it an easy financial decision to buy replacement doors rather than refurbish their existing doors. Entry doors are much more expensive than interior doors. If our customer likes the door they already have, it probably will make sense to have us refurbish it. But we also paint many replacement doors as well.
Recently, a customer contacted us about refurbishing seventeen interior doors. She really liked her doors. She did not want to replace them. These doors were eight feet tall and weighed around two hundred pounds each. They were very solid doors. They were also thirty years old and showed some wear and tear. You can see this in the picture below. The bottoms, the edges and the trim of many of the doors were banged up.
Our standard process for prepping doors is as follows:
- Fill dents, holes and cracks with wood filler.
- Scrape peeling paint.
- Sand all surfaces until smooth.
- Wash doors to remove dust, grease and grime.
- Apply quality door primer paint.
After the preparation is complete, we apply two coats of a quality urethane trim enamel paint.
The customer chose black semi-gloss. You can see in the picture that the doors turned out well . . . good as new.
